Link: Why books don’t work

When people read a book, they often don’t retain very much of the information found inside. This is the case with lectures as well. This is because of the cognitive model that they adhere to: presenter writes/speaks about a topic; learner reads/hears about a topic; learner understands a topic. However, this model doesn’t tend to work very well. It often floods the learner with too much information to be absorbed all at once.

There are two paths ahead. The first is to attempt to improve the mediums of books and lectures. However, it might be better to pursue the creation of other mediums. One useful tool that these mediums could employ is spaced repetition, which helps the learner retain the information more effectively.
